TCHS Chess Legends, Part II
Following in Rex and Donald's footsteps came Patrick Begay, who led the team on 1st board his junior year after playing mostly JV his freshman year and 3rd board the following year. In 1985 Pat was nearly unbeatable; in fact, no one beat him in a tournament game all year until the 3rd round at the state team tournament.

While the 1988 chess team didn't get recognized as state champions since we were edged out on a secondary tiebreaker after Tucson University came from behind to draw us in our head to head match, this was undoubtedly our best team of all time! Led by Harold Yazzie, who was named National High School Co-champion that year, we had two more highly ranked seniors with Dwayne Kiyaani playing 2nd board and Charles Butler on 3rd. Our 4th and 5th boards were filled by two dangerous sophomores in Elfrederick Secody and Jason Stevens.
One indicator of this team's strength is the fact that Tucson University--who struggled from behind to tie us--one month later won the National High School Team Championship.
