The highlight of the 1993 TCHS chess season was Ryan Begay's victory in the State Individual Championship. His victory over Gilbert's David Van Horn in the championship round personified Tuba City "fighting chess", as Ryan came out surviving a questionable opening and weathering an aggressive middle game attack to arrive at a dead even rook and pawn endgame. Here Ryan patiently waited for Van Horn to blunder, and Ryan destroyed him to take the championship.
Chess is like Life. Hang in and never give up, and you will become a winner!
