It all starts with a "Dream". Gary wanted to become the best chess player possible and wanted the Tuba City high School chess team to beat out the Phoenix and Tucson schools to become state champions. So Gary turned into a fanatical chess player, living the game 24 hours a day, never wavering from that dream of becoming a state champion.
Great things are accomplished by "fanatics". Gary played first board and led the team to its first state championship in 1984.
