Born in County Antrium, Ireland in 1758, James McComb come to America 18 years later, settling in Cumberland County, Pa. in 1776. In 1778 he served as a private in Capt. Thomas Askey's company of Militia and rose to the rank of Colonel in General Washington's army. At the close of the Revolutionary War, he was honorably discharged.
McComb was elected to the state Legislature and was a member for 13 years. He was a Brig. General of the Militia and was ordered into action during the War of 1812.
He married Nancy Jack in Indiana County in Pa. They had nine children: George, James, Jane, John, David, Mary, Andrew, Joseph, and Nancy. McComb was one of the first Elders of Bethel Presbyterian Church, where he is buried, dying in 1814 at the age of 56.
